A Software Engineer (read programmer...) working on a multi-million dollar software product generally has a pretty exciting job. While some of you might disagree, I'm sure you are curious, so here are a few of the different things that I do at my job on a daily basis. Definitely enjoy the work I do, and I get to do a variety of things every day, which is nice. It also impacts quite a few people, as there are thousands who use our product on a daily basis. Nice to know that the work we put in doesn't go to waste.
Pretty regularly deal with a lot of css work. As I tell people, I try to make the interweb look pretty. Sometimes I think I do alright. I also tend to be a bit picky when it comes to the User Interface. Think I may have gotten this bit of pickiness from the years I spent working with O.D. on the job trying to make some pretty things every day. Guess concrete work isn't always dirty (although according to Mike Rowe, it is a dirty job).
I also do a lot of work in the jQuery department. Whether it is the jQueryUI or just the regular jQuery I try to make things interact a bit better than a standard page. The jQueryUI toolkit is very good for much of this, but we often end up doing a lot of custom javascript to get some different things accomplished for the site.
Since our application runs on java, I will get my hands dirty in the backend java code as well. Nice thing about the java is that it is much more predictable than the jsp/css/javascript/ie/safari/firefox/chrome mess is at times. And that is kinda nice.
I'm sure this surprises all of you. Or at least those of you that know me well. I do talk every once in a while. And when I talk I apparently have a bit of an opinion about a few things (dripping a bit of sarcasm right now for those of you who were wondering). I guess I'm not always right (probably wrong about 5% of the time), but I tend to agree with those that think a bit of dialogue is a good thing when trying to work towards a good product. Now if only we could tell our politicians this... but I'll leave that to a happy hour discussion.
I have been involved in a few different projects and websites including a site for Rogness Construction. This is one of the newest of my creations. I have also created numerous different sites for varying purposes, usually for my own amusement and proof of concept. To be honest, I often stumble upon these sites and am continually amused at what I find there. Once, I actually deleted most of my websites with an accidental 'rm -rfv *' command. Oops. Thankfully, my Time Capsule tends to save my bacon when I do something silly like that now. Maybe I'll post the content someday as a throwback day or something.
I also created a website for Oxendahl Construction. This is actually my Uncle's business out in Spokane, Washington. They are awesome. Seriously. I've seen some of the work they have done and it is really amazing. Check out the site for some examples. Or, if you are in the market (and live in Spokane...), give them a call and get something done. I'll vouch for the quality, it is impeccable.
